    The name “ruby” comes from the Latin word “ruber” meaning “red”. Early records also named rubies “Ratnaraj” in Sanskrit, meaning “King of Gems”.
    They can come in a variety of different shades. Rubies can be anything from a deep rich red to a more pinkish tone. They are made of corundum and get their signature red color from trace amounts of chromium. While corundum can come in many different colors, those stones would actually be classified as sapphires instead of rubies.

    Pigeon blood ruby is the most sought-after color variety of the ruby gemstone. Pigeon Blood Ruby meaning is primarily associated with its color that matches exactly with the blood drawn from a freshly killed pigeon. Comparably sized diamonds average a sales price of around $125,000 per carat. Rubies of this magnitude are significantly more rare than larger sized diamonds, which explains the difference in price.

    Similar to Emeralds, almost all rubies have some type of imperfection, which helps in identifying synthetics. Synthetic rubies can be identified by its lack of inclusions. Simulated rubies were used in jewelry production since the 1850s. They are also known as garnet doublets, where a piece of garnet is fused with a pinkish-red piece of glass. This creates a gem that looks like a much more expensive ruby however is not a ruby it is synthetic.

The rubies used in the making of the piece were also a wedding gift; Elizabeth received them from the people of Burma. The gift included precisely 96 rubies, all of which are now set in the tiara. The Burmese people believe that rubies help protect the wearer from the 96 diseases that can afflict the human body — they definitely wanted to ensure that Elizabeth remained hale and hearty. 

  • Rubies are NOT Red Spinel's
  • Red spinel was assumed to be a ruby until scientists discovered it was a completely different gemstone in the late 18th century! One of the most famous examples of this mistaken identity is the “The Black Prince’s Ruby”, a 170-carat irregular spinel bead that has been in the British Royal Family’s possession since 1367.
