How do I choose the right engagement ring?
Choosing an engagement ring might be a tricky task. from our experience, we always like to say there are two types of brides. One has her entire wedding planned out from a very young age. She knows exactly how her wedding dress will look like, the color of the flowers at the reception and perhaps even the groom! But mainly she has the perfect idea of what engagement ring she would go for, from the shape of the center stone down to the smallest details like gold color or setting style. The second kind has no clue what she wants, has never really given it a thought, and is confronted with decisions as soon as she meets Mr. perfect. Leaving aside all the other wedding preps, focusing on the engagement ring we've gathered all the important information you need to know to make it easier for you to choose the right engagement ring for you.
1. Choose the diamond shape
Do you prefer a timeless classic look - round shape or are you more the trendy fashionista type. Do you usually go for a safe look or do you like to be daring with current trends? By choosing a round stone you can never go wrong. you can wear it proudly for years to come without feeling outdated. On the other hand, fancy-shaped diamonds such as emeralds, cushions, and pear shapes can offer a wider selection of style options adding a personal touch. Budget wise these unique shapes can be significantly cheaper than a round stone with the same carat weight. However it is important to keep in mind trends are temporary and change every once in a while.
2. Think of the Carat Size
The price of a diamond is based on its carat weight although the proportions of the stone aren't less important. Remember, carats are actually a measure of weight, not size, so the measurements of a 1 carat diamond will differ from stone to stone. Even though size matters, don't compromise on a perfectly well-cut diamond.
3. Learn about Color and Clarity
After you've chosen the shape and size of the diamond it is time to focus on color and clarity. Diamond colors are graded from D to Z.
D being colorless is the rarest color and is very valuable. Z having a slight yellow tinge is less rare. The most recommended colors for engagement rings are from D to J.
Diamond clarity refers to how flawless a diamond is. Every diamond is graded by the size, color, and appearance of its inclusions. Heavy inclusions can impact the sparkle and value of your diamond. Anyways don't be too hard on yourself, both color and clarity are difficult to identify for someone who's not an expert.
4. Choose the ring metal and style
Traditionally engagement rings are made from yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold. Platinum is also an option but will be more expensive because the metal is much rarer and weighs more than gold. Choose your color wisely according to your skin color or according to your current jewelry metal color.
Pick a style and you are ready to go.
5. Ask for a certificate
A diamond certificate or report given by an independent international gemological laboratory is a must when it comes to diamonds and jewelry. It includes all details as carat weight, measurements, shape, cut, color, and clarity of the diamond.
The certificate will also be useful for appraisal and insurance purposes.
In other words you are only going to propose ones, so make it count!
